19 Persons, Including 9 Russian Tourists, Rescued by Drishti Marine Lifesavers Over Extended Diwali Weekend

~ Drishti Marine lifesavers conducted one triple rescue, Three double rescues and 12 single rescues across Goa's coastline and the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

~ A four-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh who had an epilepsy bout was administered first aid at Baga beach.

Panaji, October 2025: Over the extended Diwali weekend which witnessed increased footfalls to Goa’s beaches, Drishti Marine lifesavers carried out multiple rescues across Goa’s coastline, rescuing 19 persons from drowning, including foreign tourists and domestic visitors

Palolem beach: A 21-year-old man from Karnataka was rescued after being pulled into deep water by a strong current. Despite warnings from lifesavers, the group of three persons he was with had ventured into the sea, but the 21-year-old person was unable to swim back ashore. Lifesaver Vikas Mehta rushed in with a rescue tube, assisted by Samir Kankonkar on a jetski, to bring the victim safely to shore.

Butterfly beach: A 25-year-old man from Gujarat was caught in a rip current while posing for a photograph. Lifesaver Shekhar Velip reached him with a rescue tube and brought him safely ashore.

Talpona beach: Caught in an aggressive lateral current, a 62-year-old man residing in Patnem panicked while swimming. Lifesaver Arvind Girip intervened using a rescue tube and brought him safely to land.

Calangute beach: Two separate rescues were conducted at Calangute over the extended weekend. A 17-year-old boy from Chhattisgarh, despite warnings about rip currents, found himself struggling in the water. Lifesaver Manoj rescued him with a rescue tube. In another incident, a 29-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was caught in a rip current while swimming. Lifesavers Manoj Manjhi and Umesh Madaikar, using a jetski, quickly brought him to safety.

Candolim beach: Four separate incidents were reported off Candolim beach. A 42-year-old Russian woman was rescued by lifesavers Sunil Matondkar and Yogendra Singh after being caught in a rip current. In another case, a 25-year-old man from Chhattisgarh was pulled into a lateral current while swimming and was rescued by captain Mehaboob Tashildar and lifesaver Shrinath Lonekar. Two Russian women aged 53 and 59 were also caught in a rip current and rescued by a coordinated team comprising Charp Mistri, Vishal Bhute, and Lokesh Tanwar. A 50-year-old Russian woman was similarly pulled into a current and rescued by lifesaver Sunil Matondkar.

Baga beach: Lifesavers stationed at Baga beach responded to multiple emergencies over the weekend. Two Russian women aged 52 and 56, along with a 24-year-old man from Karnataka who jumped in to assist them, were rescued after being caught in a rip current. Lifesaver Harichandra Nagvekar used a rescue board to bring all three safely ashore. At the same beach, two men aged 22 and 25 from Tamil Nadu were rescued after being swept away by a lateral current. Lifesavers Sandesh Paryekar and Sauvrav Kumar reached them using a rescue board and tube, bringing them ashore safely. In another incident, a four-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh suffered an epileptic seizure at a beachside restaurant. Lifesavers Sushant Gaonkar and Vinod Gaonkar administered oxygen and first aid before the child was transferred to Asilo Hospital in a 108 ambulance.

Sinquerim beach: Two separate rescues were carried out by the lifesaving team at Sinquerim. A 47-year-old Russian man was caught in a lateral current and rescued by lifesaver Nanda Anand Naik using a rescue board. In another incident, a 57-year-old woman from Mumbai, who was a weak swimmer, struggled while swimming and was rescued by lifesaver Anand Rawool with the support of captain Divakar Desai.

Morjim beach: Two Russian nationals, a 33-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, were swimming seawards when they were caught in a rip current. Lifesavers Sant Parab and Mahadev Gawde, assisted by Supervisor Tushar Kharade on a jetski, rescued them and brought them safely ashore.

Dudhsagar waterfalls: A 24-year-old man from Gujarat who jumped into the water without a life jacket drifted towards the current. Captain Babu Gavli threw a throw bag to stop him, while lifesaver Irfan Shaikh entered the water with a rescue tube and pulled him to safety.
